FOR THOUSANDS OF YEARS THE GAMES HAVE BROUGHT PEOPLE AND COUNTRIES TOGETHER IN PEACE TO COMPETE FOR GOLD. Through the 12 centuries of the Olympic Games, many wonderful athletes have competed, moving the crowds with their great achievements. Although mortal, their Olympic victories immortalized them. The accomplishments of competitors centuries ago stand beside those of today as the pinnacle of human achievement.
The 2008 Beijing Summer Games mark the first time China will host the world’s largest sporting spectacle. The Chinese government has pledged to spend 20 billion U.S. dollars building sports complexes and refurbishing the Beijing infrastructure.
