So, how's grocery store in Thailand? Cheep? Expensive? Good variety?
Don't know, I don't like shopping. That is what the maid is for. She knows what she is cooking, my wife tells her. They both get driven to the market and buy the required groceries.
They always buy fresh stuff, if it isn't fresh, normally it goes in the bin. If its bad, it goes out the window and the maid loses a day's pay.
Our food budget for us is about 25k Baht a month, that includes premium items like cheese, red wine and beef. Other Premium items are the likes of proper imported coffee and chocolate.
Before you scoff, think about it, 25k a month on food is really only a daily (eat) of 830 Baht a day or $22- a day, and that is living very well. That includes cooked Breakfast for the family lunch 50% and dinner most nights. We also entertain.
So in summary apart from imported specalties the food here is fresh and of a high quality, if it isn't sack the maid.
Kalimna Shiraz, very drinkable, almost what you would call a "quaffing-red"
Other nice offerings as well, but what you say is correct, a glass or 3 of red wine (good for the body) with dinner equates to myseld and Mrs Pot consuming a bottle of red each night.
Mrs Pot, who is Khmer "Ser-day" is now taken by a drop or two with dinner. Therefore thats a bottle every night, we eat at home.
Do the mathematics, if we ate at home every night the wine bill would be 40k+ a month. So I so make an "unconditional grant" to the wine cellar (refridgerator) every month.
While I am not all that knowledgeable re wines..... I do have a yearning for the occassional PORT.....
However it does seem to be hard to find here in Chiang Mai and also very expensive.... From the time I lived in Aus.... seem to have developed a favoring for Brown Brothers vintage port......
How about other areas of Asia... Is it hard to find and more or less expensive than home ?
The average thai grocery store sucks big time.
1 aisle for packaged noodle soups
3 aisles for sugar ladened snacks
2 aisles for skin whitener products
1 aisle for sugar laden drinks
2 aisles for 5 $ bottles of whisky
and then some more misc garbage
there are several markets where foreigners can get decent western groceries. Foodland, Villa Market, and Tops are probably the the most popular chains among the expat communtiy.
