I've heard lots of nice things about Boracay Island/Islands in the Philippines. Is there something special about the place or is just an island developed for tourists?

I've been to Boracay a few times and always look forward to my next visit. The sand in Boracay is truely white - sunglasses are a necessity. When I've been there, the locals say that it was crowded - there may have been a dozen people on 7-mile stretch of White beach. Maybe all the rest were out diving or visiting nearby islands.

Boracay is a place to bring a girlfriend or wife. There are few ladies available.

Many tourists from all over the world have visited there. Some of them were Chefs in their own country before. Some decided to stay and open a restaraunt and feature their countries specialities. You can have the best German, French, Indian, Thai, Japanese, Korean, etc you'll ever find outside those countries. All you can eat Filipino buffets on the beach for 300 pesos. Most of the restaraunts have similar prices and all delicious.

There were 2 nightclubs. One, right on the beach, The Beachcomber, starts up at 10:00P and closes around 4:00A.

There are 2 to 5-star places to stay. Be careful where you stay though. The 5-star places are away from the beach and action and you need a ride to get to the beach and action. NO vehicular traffic is allowed after 10:00P. I prefer to stay in the middle of White Beach at the Red Coconut. From the Red Coconut, you can easily walk to both nightclubs, the market, and all the restaraunts, dive and touristy shops.

All-in-all, it's a great place to relax. There are internet cafes there too if you really want to stay in-touch with reality.

Thanks Thats a great review and it certainly sounds like a cool place to visit.

I assume safety is not an issue as I have heard that the Philippines can be unsafe in places.

I thought the internet was to escape reality Very Happy

Hello,

I agree with Doug because I have been to Boracay and it is one of the best and famous beaches in my country... you should try seeing the place because it is "PARADISE" to everybody and to me... I think it is safe to travel here most likely in Boracay... Laughing

Thanks expat! Very Happy

Red Coconut is a very nice hotel. Right on the beach and is fairly central to everything. I stayed there last weekend and service is tops. D'Mall D'Boracay is just beside this hotel so if you wanna do some quick shopping or grab something to eat, you don't need to go too far.

Here's their website:

By the way, for most Boracay hotels peak season starts December 1 (some even as early as October 15) so better start packing your bags now if you wanna make the most out of your budget. Wink

Pretty much especially around the holidays. If you don't like crowded beaches, the dates to avoid are the following:

Christmas and New Year's
Ati-atihan Festival (last weekend of January)
Holy Week (March 20-26, 2005, the exact dates change every year)

Super peak rates will apply and there will be too many people. Summer months are from late March to May so expect quite a bunch of families going to the beach too. Booking should be done a month in advance to make sure that you get a confirmed reservation, or you can choose to stay in one of the 5-star hotels (lotsa choices) but they could be quite expensive.

June to early October is officially the wet season in the Philippines and it is obviously not the best time to come to Boracay.

Best time to go there will be early June or mid October. Less people, off peak rates in hotels and airlines and the sun will not be too hot.

The last time we visited Boracay was 1998 of August, which was 6 years ago. By that time we arrive their… less people but mostly foreign tourist and native resident who is around.

You need budget and time to go there. It is more convenient if you asked the assistance of an agency for your airfare and lodging but look for cheaper one in the internet or to your hotel assistance when you arrive here… if you had a tight budget they got plenty of off peak rates to offer you and best time to go there, you have to do what Road kill suggested on this forum.

When we go back to Boracay I will suggest the Red Coconut Hotel Road kill! Hoping it will be soon… thanks, I learned a lot from you.

one thing i don't see mentioned nearly enough when people talk about boracay is the distinct difference between the slow and busy season. i cannot stress this enough. the slow season is d-e-a-d. i'd always just figured a few less people, big deal, better for me, right? ummm, wrong. yeah, there's less people ... and places are much cheaper. but hell, most of the bars and restaurants (well, at least the ones i like going to) are boarded up, too! made the mistake of going during slow season once. just once. busy season may cost more, but it's definitely worth it. new years, here i come. i spent christmas and new years in boracay a few years ago and it was fantastic! it was so strange to see palm trees decorated with christmas lights and the fireworks at that time of year.

boracay is very beautiful, similar to thailand a little. there are all the things to do like you were on Patong with the small crowds and coziness of something similar to Koh Phanang.

My best memory was taking a 3 hour sail boat around the island. there were much bigger waves than i expected and it was so exciting. we crakced open a few beers and watched the sun go down on boracay on our way in to dock... there's no smilie for that feeling.

My wife and I arrived on Boracay Island back in January 1980 so feel like we've grown up here almost, waching all the changes over the last 25+ years. Our Explore Philippines website at; http://asiabill.pages.qpg.com/id1.html includes many photos and budhget travel tips for Boracay Island. There's just no place in S.E. Asia like Boracay Island.
