hi.. am i expat from the neighbour country looking for alternatives to cheap phone calls back home or even locally. appreciate if theres any recommendations. thanks!
Try http://www.jajah.com/ All you need is computer with internet for dialling. The call itself is a regular phone call over any mobile or installed phone. For people with slow internet connections the perfect alternative to VOIP. In my opinion also better transfer quality . _________________ Thailand Forum - Korat Forum..
thanks for the info. that sounds interesting.. was juz wondering hows the quality is like. u've tried the service before?
from the brief description, the phone call can only be made if im having an internet. any idea if i can make calls from phone to phone with low costs too?
001 809 + (country code) xxx xxxxx (from TOT landline 7 THB/min
007 + (country code) xxx xxxxx (from TOT landline 9 THB/min
009 + (country code) xxx xxxxx (from TT&T/true landline 7 THB/min
009 + (country code) xxx xxxxx (from mobile phone 7 THB/min
1234 xxxxx from TOT landline within Thailand 37 to 70 % cheaper
Jajah calls are only dialled (registered) via computer/internet. You are called on your phone then and connected to the number you dialled on the PC within half a second. Your call is over the phone lines. Quality is the same as calls dialled on the normal phones, unlike the cheap numbers which often get transferred to VOIP and back to phone lines, loosing a lot of quality. _________________ Thailand Forum - Korat Forum..
tried jajah. thats really cool! thanks for the recommendation. but, still felt that theres little hassle involved as the call need to be submitted over the web and free only to jajah users.
am also trying to look for a service that allows me to make phone to phone call when im in overseas. as i travel alot for business esp to places like malaysia, vietnam and china. i do travel with laptop, but always have difficulty connecting to the net as the countries broadband service is not that accessible yet. so, would prefer to have a service that allow calls from phone to phone with low cost. moreover, the other party that im calling might not be online most of the time. appreciate if theres recommendations. thanks
Why don't you get a GPRS dongle to connect to the internet while travelling. GPRS is everywhere where also a mobile phone reaches.
Back to Jajah: prices for international calls from phone to phone cost 2 - 5 cents a minute. Only internet access for dialling is an obstacle.
Using a GPRS dongle with SIM cards from the country you're at gives you an internet connection everywhere - though slow: 30 - 100 kbps. Enough for reading newspapers, listening to radio, controlling your bank account, doing your email etc.

The party you're calling with Jajah is not contacted through the internet, his phone rings! _________________ Thailand Forum - Korat Forum..
hmm.. thanks. but connecting to gprs when you're in overseas are very expensive esp developing country. moreover i think it will be a quite a headache to use jajah with gprs. however, there seems to have many service provider out there. i've also found an useful service over the weekend, their call back service was pretty impressive.. allowing caller to trigger a call using either phone or over the web. its a service by globalroam. try searching on web and u'll catch them. else, you can leave me a message. something that i personally think its worth trying. that solves my problem to a certain extent though.

Investing about $5 to $7 for a SIM card of the local mobile phone provider gives you access to GPRS very cheap (for example 1THB/min.), and even cheaper if you register a prepaid package from that provider. As an example: 535 THB (US$15) for 12.000 minutes of GPRS per month from AIS (call *138) in Thailand. Smaller packages available too.
. . . and your call does not go over GPRS as I said above, only the dialling/registering of the call. You'll be called via phone line resp. mobile phone and connected to the phone you call, without the internet in between. _________________ Thailand Forum - Korat Forum..
the GRPS charges are really tempting.. thanks for the info. really appreciate that. now that i know thailand provides such cheap gprs services, am looking forward to my next trip there.
have started to use a call back service recently in singapore and its been quite a cost savings to me.. yet to try it out in other countries though.. will update if the service satisfies me that it worth a recommendation

Had a look at globalroam. Their fees don't impress me at all: about ten times of Jajah, and still a multiple of the direct-dialled calls via the numbers I've given above. Guess we should work on a catalogue of direct-dialling numbers with low fees to put under the countries' sections with a reference guide on "Newspaper Stand & Weblinks"
i think globalroam services is also targetting at convenience. the differentiation is that the callback can be triggered by a phone and doesnt need to go online to dial a call. these will bring convenience in countries that are not that technologically advanced.
well, if u're really keen in consolidating the rates, let me know how i can help ya! cheers

Are we living in the same era?

: the C.E.O himself! Advice: with new services jumping on the market about every day - for example direct-dialled calls charged on the phone bill from Germany to here can be made from EUR 0.0191 per minute - callback services like jajah and globalroam gotta be creative to beat that! "Convenience" means more direct-dialled calls at extremely low prices. Callback services can only compete with each other through even lower fees or granting extremely generous credit (at the risk of never getting paid). Competing with the direct-dialled calling is only possible by offering free calls.
Many phone service providers try competition with flat rates. Try to combine those flat rates with attractive "roaming services" like callback or even better "code phone" (similar to VISAphone), i.e. dialling an internationally valid billing code (not prepaid) at attractive fees as a business idea; it's only a matter of technology . . . _________________ Thailand Forum - Korat Forum..
we definitely are in the same era!! but we are not living in the same country though. been to developing countries like vietnam, internet connection arent easily available. not even malaysia, where i originated from, not all states have got broadband internet access. some are still living through with 56k dial up.
as a business person, i strongly believe that a service provider would not be able to provide the cheapest rates to all countries. there would be some that are charged at a higher rate to average up their P&L for the product. so, as the end user we should be able to choose the right provider for ourself. personally, i think that price should not be the only influential factor to end users like us they would require their service.

Hi,
You can try Skype. Skype is voip, and has very low call rates. I've been using Skype for quite some time now. The call quality is good and its easy. And it has a vast network. Some skype phones don't need a PC to operate. And it does have some of these very cool features.
You can use this link to visit their site. www.Skype.com
