CHINA Charity, the country's biggest charitable organization, will send representatives to the United States to investigate a batch of donations that included outdated medical equipment and stained bedding and clothing.
A China Charity official, who declined to be named, said that the organization has contacted the donor, The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints in Salt Lake City, Utah, to find out why the goods were shipped.
Charity officials said the United States has offered cash to buy the same amount of donated goods, and talks on how to resolve the issue are under way.
The four containers holding the donated goods were valued at US$4 million. Two were sent to Wuhan, capital of Hubei Province, one went to Hefei, capital of Anhui Province, and one to Beijing.
They were meant to aid orphanage clinics.
Richard Hunter, a spokesman for The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints in Hong Kong, said he was surprised at the questionable donations, adding that the church gives only high-quality goods and its previous gifts to China contained no problem material.
The church provides humanitarian services to more than 100 countries and regions.
It sent officials to Beijing on Saturday to look into the case.
