"Chuar" sounds pretty close to what it actually sounds like, the Chinese character is pronounced Chuan, but the tail sound "er" comes from "Beijinghua" the Beijing dialect. It seems that "Chuar" was originated in Xinjiang which is why you don't see pork on these BBQ stands, the population there is predominantly muslim. Yep, Chuar and Pijiu (beer) is a great combination and if there is a Xinjiang restaurant nearby you should also try Chuar with their toasted nan bread (kao nang) - yummy!

So is 'Chuar' Mandarin then? And the actual meaning is different from "Cao Zhu" (BBQ pork) My Mandarin is very poor, so please feel free to correct me if I'm wrong!
Population here down south is not predominantly Muslim, so I wonder why there's no pork BBQ here. Probably because the idea got passed down from XinJiang. Speaking of which, I've heard of those Xinjiang restaurants, but I didnt know it was a province in China too!
