A Chinese visa is a permit issued by the Chinese visa authorities to an alien for entry into, exit from or transit through China. The Chinese visa authorities may issue a Diplomatic, Courtesy, Service or Ordinary Visa to an alien according to his status, purpose of visit to China or passport type. The Ordinary Visa consists of eight sub-categories, which are respectively marked with Chinese phonetic letters C, D, F, G, J-1, J-2, L, X and Z.
C Visa: Issued to crewmembers to perform duties on board an international train, airliner or other vessel, and their accompanying family members.
D Visa: Issued to an alien who comes to reside permanently in China.
F Visa: Issued to an alien who is invited to China for a visit, an investigation, a lecture, to do business, scientific-technological and culture exchanges, short-term advanced studies or intern practice for a period of no more than six months.
G Visa: Issued to an alien who transits through China.
J-1 Visa: Issued to foreign resident correspondents in China.
J-2 Visa: Issued to foreign correspondents who make short trips to China on reporting tasks.
L Visa: Issued to an alien who comes to China for sightseeing, family visiting or other private purposes.
X Visa: Issued to an alien who comes to China for study, advanced studies or intern practice for a period of more than six months.
Z Visa: Issued to an alien who comes to China for a post or employment, and his or her accompanying family members.
The overseas Chinese visa authorities are Chinese embassies, consulates, and other offices authorized by the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of China. If a foreigner intends to enter into, exit from or transit through Chinese territory, he/she shall apply to the above-mentioned Chinese visa authorities for a Chinese visa.
Visas are not required of aliens (except citizens of the United States and the United Kingdom), who hold final destination tickets and have booked seats on international airliners flying directly through China, and will stay in a transit city for less than 24 hours without leaving the airport.
Visas are not required of Citizens of the following countries, who transit through Pudong Airport or Hongqiao Airport of Shanghai, provided they hold valid passports, visas for the onward countries, final destination tickets and have booked seats, and stay in Shanghai for less than 48 hours:

Since Visa requirements change reasonably often, particularly if you are an American, you would be better off posting a link to a relevant Government Visa website rather than having possibly outdated information in this sticky. _________________ "I'd rather have a bottle in front of me than a frontal labotomy".

I know that now they have changed it so that you can come in any out of China with your existing visa without having to have a re-entry visa. (At least the X visas) _________________ http://groups.msn.com/HangingoutinChina/messages.msnw

I've just received my passport back today. Instead of the old Z visa, there is now a page in my passport entitled " Residence Permit For Foreigner in the People's Republic of China". This allows multiple entries and is valid until 31st July 2006.
The Foreign Expert's Certificate is still being issued, however the little green residence books are no longer in existence. _________________ EXPAT IN CHINA

My 'little green residence book' expires on the 31st of this month. And my Z visa expires on the 27th.
Will they give me any hassles if I leave on the 31st?
Hi, I have just had my visa renewed and the system has tightened up considerably, plus as Wocca, I have lost my little green book (I will miss that little green book as it was so useful when traveling around China).
The Experts license had to be issued in the provincial capital, but the health card and Visa were issued in the local major city [the medical (quite comprehensive) also had to be conducted in the local major city not in the small city I am located in as other years]. The Visa is now a "Residence Permit for Foreignor in the PRC".
I have to compliment the Goverment Bureaus concerned in the issue of the Visa and other documents as it took only 3 days this year which is a lot less time than previous years.
As I go home to Thailand once every 6 weeks as well as other travel overseas the multiple travel aspect of the new visa in very useful.
My family from Thailand also travels here to visit me in China twice a year and has never had a problem obtaining a Visa in Bangkok (takes about 24 hours and one time when I was in hospital my wife obtained an emergency visa issue in 3 hours). So zero complaints about the PRC Embassy in Bangkok (unlike the British Embassy!!)

2 points of interest here...
1/ The little green books for residency were replaced in Feb 2005 and incorporated into your visas...
2/ Don't let your visa expire...
You can get a tempory visa extention with little fuss, usually...
If you let your visa expire, it is likely to cost you 500 RMB per day up to 5000 RMB but you will have difficulties...
Many foreigners have their passports held for weeks on end...
