How many people speak English in Thailand? How well do they speak? Also if you speak English, can you get around in Thailand comfortably? _________________ Online Degrees : Movie Reviews |

I've been around to a few different places over the years. Nowhere near as many as a lot of the good folks on here, but enough to have an opinion.
As the above poster said, it's not a problem in the touristy areas. I've been to places other than those listed below, but not long enough to get a decent impression.
Bangkok, Pattaya, Phuket, Chiang Mai - no problems
Hat Yai, Udon Thani, Si Racha - OK. If you don't have any luck speaking English with the first person, you'll be ok with the second one.
Chon Buri, Bang Saen - virtually noone. Bang Saen is a beach resort town too. One receptionist at the international hotel spoke some English, but that was it. Many restaurants (even the good ones) don't have English menus.
Bang Saen is a great place though. By the way I don't think the level of English in a place has too much of a bearing on comfort. But that's just my opinion |

I've been there twice, most recently for a week in January this year. Magic place. I couldn't believe there was somewhere like that so close to Bangkok
Mind you, the bus ride would be a drag (or does he drive?) |

I hired a car once and it took an hour and 15 minutes with a brief stop (It wasn't me driving though). So I guess that'd be right.
Some of the hotels in Bang Saen advertise themselves as being "45 minutes*" from Bangkok. I'm sure that if you look closely enough at the brochure, you'll see:
*only if you drive there at 2:30am Mondays and Tuesdays

I caught a local bus into Phitsanalouk and quickly left, because I couldn't speak Thai and I felt completely lost ....
Perhaps if I was part of an organised tour group, the situation might have been different _________________ EXPAT IN CHINA |

I had a bit of spare time, so I jumped on a bus from Chiang Rai. Decided to check out Phitsanalouk. Couldn't find my way around at all when I arrived at that bus station, so I got on another bus to Bangkok.
From there to Koh Chang - Cambodia - Vietnam - China _________________ EXPAT IN CHINA |
