have read a good amount about corregidor on a number of boards, but haven't seen much in the way of pics ... so here ya go. it's definitely worth a daytrip. possibly even an overnighter. true, you might get a bit bored, but can rent a bike and tool around parts of the island you weren't able to check out during the day. including offshoots of the main tunnel. nice.
the tour? well, there's a sh*tload ('sh*tload' being a metric term of measurment for 'plenty') of options -- tour and transfer only; with packed lunch; with plated lunch; with buffet lunch; overnight in hotel; overnight camping, etc. the buffet's a great deal (served at the hotel) and only P100 more than the plated lunch. bring your own drinks in from the tour tram. will be about half the cost (if not less) of what they charge inside. the tour guides will tell you this as well, so no need to worry about getting caught trying to "pull one over."
can't stress enough how necessary it is you make reservations. figured it's the philippines, so i can always just show up and get a spot, right? wrong. got put on a long-ass wait and only got on after stumbling our way into two spots on a p.i. company outing after a couple of their people didn't show. saw plenty of others get turned away. repeat, if you're going, make reservations! you're getting up at the crack of dawn and out to the harbor at 7 in the morning ... why risk it? what are you gonna do if you don't get on? there's sometimes a second boat around 10:30, but it's not a definite.
anyway, tour w/buffet is P1040. there's an optional P150 fee for the light & sound show in malinta tunnel ... which although sounding cheesy, is actually fairly informative. erase the image of lights flashing and smoke filling up the place, it's more of a walk-through diorama than anything else.
Although you can get there from Mariveles, and also other towns on the Bataan penisula, the best way is the boat from Manila.
It goes, I should say used to go, twice a day, and the whole day is barely enough to see everything, as Stringbeam said.
For anyone interested in WW2 history, Bataan has the monument to the start of the death march, and other markers along the route. _________________ The Middle Eastern states aren't nations; they're quarrels with borders.- P. J. O'Rourke
Even though I live here (P.I.) I haven't been in Corregidor ... maybe one of this days but I heard so many things about WWII and one of our historic places... good advise, pare
