This thread is for all of us cricket lovers out there .
To start things off, what was the greatest one day match in your opinion?
For me, it would have to be the recent Australia-South Africa one day match in the Wanderers ... the Aussies plundered South Africa and scored a mammoth 430 something ... a good 80 runs or so more than had EVEN been scored before!
No-one would have given the Proteas a chance when they walked out to bat, but OH BOY Smith lashed the Aussies, and then Gibbs bashed them all over the place - Punter Ponting's bashing earlier on in the day ultimately wasn't of much use! Still came down to the wire though, and what a moment it musta been for Boucher!
Though I am a staunch Aussie supporter when it comes to cricket (even over the Indian team) - I must say I was thrilled when the Africans clinched this one
Thoughts, opinions, feelings ...
Rahul
PS: I got the idea for this thread after the pasting the Lankans gave the Proteas today in the Test match in Sri Lanka.
PS#2: In their current batting form (which Sanath reignited with those explosive hundreds in England - ever seen a team chase down a 300 PLUS total BEFORE 35 overs ??????? - and then against the hapless Dutch, where they created another 1 day record) - I'm betting on the Lankans to win the next Cup _________________ Dongguan Expat - Your online Community!

Any match that England or S. Africa get beaten . . .
AWW, come on I agree with the England part but come on, the Proteas chased that record total ... gotta give them credit for that! In fact if England chased such a total, I'd give THEM credit for it too!
For me, it would have to be the recent Australia-South Africa one day match in the Wanderers ...
The Aussies had a third string bowling attack on for that one. Dodgy.
I would say the 1999 World Cup semi-final between South Africa and Australia. You know, the one where SA needed one run off the last ball and Allan Donald forgot which direction he had to run.
Shane Warne took a bag of wickets and there was also THAT dropped catch where Herschelle Gibbs put down Steve Waugh.
The drama, the tension...!! _________________ Wer tanzen will, muss die Musik bezahlen

Oh yeah I remember the "you dropped the Cup boy" match .
But Hewer, gotta remember the Proteas were without Pollock too on that day (the 400 match)... Pollock's constricting influence might have been a HUGE factor, as might have McGrath's . Also, Gibbs made amends for his '97 faux pas (I still dont know how to pronounce that ) in this match ... ... yes, I know it wasn't the Cup, but still ...
I guess I just like this match better since I'm a one day fanatic, and the more runs that are scored, and CHASED (and THIS is a big factor, I hate ONE sided matches) - the merrier Rahul is!!! I still remember the South Africa - Australia match in South Africa when the Proteas scored 331 (Smith, Gibbs, Kallis), and the Aussies chased it ... Punter and Lehmann (and Gilchrist/Hayden to a degree) were the architects there ...
What do you think?
BTW, I kinda figured yours would be the first post here ... you almost made it

Don't mean to harp but it was more a case of who we had than who was missing. Johnson and Lewis? Geez, they're a disgrace. Australia's policy in recent years has been to blood new potential test bowlers through the one-day squad and that's where these results come from. Hopefully when Buchanan steps down the madness will stop.
There have been a few near misses over the years and nothing is more exciting in cricket than when a team defies the odds to chase down a big total.
It's great to see Sri Lanka up there and I'd love to see them give it a shake in '07.
I can't help but think that India is going to click shortly and dominate the game. Sehwag, Dravid, Tendulkar, Laxman, Ganguly - what a batting line-up. Just a pity they fall foul of the selectors (Ganguly) or the fans (Laxman) or to injury (Tendulkar). The Indian fans are unbelievable and it would great for the game if the mantle of 'best team' passes over to them in the next few years.
My first loyalties obviously lie with Australia and the West Indies (my wife is from Trinidad). And of course I'm always pleased if SA loses.

Well yes I agree - Lewis and Johnson aren't the most prolific of bowlers - but the South Africans didnt have anyone either ... I mean Andre Nel is OK in a flaming/shouting contest, but when it comes right down it, he's cannon fodder for the right cannon (remember Pieterson in South Africa?). And the rest of the bowlers (Hall etc) were jokers too ...
Yup, seeing huge totals chased down is always exciting. Do you remember India VS Pakistan in the Independence Cup in Dhaka? This was a few years back ... Ganguly and Robin Singh won that one for India, after Saeed Anwar and Ijaz based the Indian bowlers.
Speaking of which, if Saeed Anwar hadn't retired, I'd bet he'd be RIGHT up there with Jayasuriya ...
Now as far as the Indian batting line-up goes, problem is they lack mental strength - except for Ganguly in the one day game. This one day team would be a VERY different one with Saurav in there ... but then that idiot jackass Greg Chappell doesn't want him, and the even more idiotic Indian board agrees ... I mean come on!!! How can you drop a guy in his 30's whose made 20 1 day centuries, and whose led India to some of the MOST memorable one day wins ever
That being said, I'm still first an Aussie supporter. Don't know why, but they seem to be mentally stronger than all the others, and I admire that trait _________________ Dongguan Expat - Your online Community!
And I forgot to add: Tendulkar seems to play for records. Not much else ...
I'd pick Saurav or Inzy or Sanath over him anyway for one dayers these days ... for tests, I'd pick Dravid over him. _________________ Dongguan Expat - Your online Community!
And I must say, much as I dont really like South Africa (including that Gawd help us Ashwell Prince) - you have to admit Graeme Smith's ONE tough SOB ... made captain at 23, and he did a GREAT job, both as captain and with the bat. Ok, so Fleming ragged him in that one series, but other than that, I think he's been great.
As for Sehwag ... first innings wonder . He turns tail when you show him the second innings for the most part. _________________ Dongguan Expat - Your online Community!

Wanted to let you know Quasi that I agree...for a change.

Fair enough Rahul. Just sour grapes on my part to be honest.

Didn't see that game, but Saeed Anwar gets a spot opening the batting in my all-time one-day team. Unbelievable once he got going (usually didn't take very long).
I remember watching the India Vs. Pakistan match during the 1996 World Cup. Aamir Sohail was smashing the Indian attack all over the park and had the b**ls to point with his bat to the stands (indicating another big hit on the way). Anyway, if I recall correctly, Venkatesh Prasad bowled him the very next ball. The crowd just went nuts!! And of course I'm sure you remember how they set fire to the stands when they were losing against Sri Lanka...

I take it you are in the pro-Ganguly camp? Chappell Vs. Ganguly is now a case study in human relations one can take at a university in Chennai. Amazing.

I once saw an Indian poll which had Steve Waugh as the third greatest leader of the 20th century. _________________ Wer tanzen will, muss die Musik bezahlen

You should have seen it, it was great! Try researching it on Cricinfo - it was a thriller, Ganguly and Robin Singh won it for India.
Oh heck yeah I remember that Cup match. Aamir Sohail acted like an idiot and lost the match. Yep, Prasad did bowl him next ball. I felt sorry for Miandad who tried to salvage something from the ruins at the end, but he was at the fag end of his career ...
Anwar though in my book was way better than Sohail. He also usually let his bat do the talking ... And once Anwar was past 60 or so, there was no stopping him.
Remember his 196 against India?? That is STILL the highest score by a batsman in 1 day matches ... Pity Islam didnt do for him what it did for Youhana.
Also, the hooliganism is Calcutta was absolutely unpardonable. I mean geez, the team can't play worth a damn (in that tournament they were TOTALLY dependent on Sachin) - but that don't mean one starts to burn the place up ...

Well, I wasn't a great Ganguly fan to be honest, I always thought the guy was a bit crazy ... but he DID lead Indian cricket well, and won many a 1 day game.
What really puzzles me is the stupidity of the Indian selectors in bringing a self obsessed buffoon (whose clearly only there for the very generous pay package) as the coach - I mean there's plenty of Indians who could do the job. Then again to be honest, if they appointed an Indian, then regional politics would come into play. Sad we Indians can't keep all this b***s*** out of the game ...
BUT, to drop a great player just because of Chappell the buffoon's ego is NOT excusable. Real reason he was dropped was Chappell didnt like him. I mean who scored more than 40 in the last Test Ganguly played in Pakistan?? And they drop him right after. :S And what is India doing in the 1 day game these days?? They went and lost to a depleted West Indian team of all things! Admitted the Windies have matchwinners, but still, the Indians should have put up a better show in the 1 day matches there. Including the Tests ...

Steve Waugh is one tough SOB ... he once batted on one leg and made 156 ... and that wasn't an isolated incident. And of course, who can forget his 120 in that one day match where Donald forgot to run in the right direction as you said? I still remember the expression on Lance Klusener's face ... he pastes Damien Fleming for two 4's, 1 run required of 4 balls and they made a hash of it. BUT, they did redeem themselves in the record chase. _________________ Dongguan Expat - Your online Community!
Well, as I speak the Sri Lankans are 634/2 of all things, on the THIRD day of a Test match, scoring at over 4 runs an over.
They previous record for the best partnership in Tests against any nation was also posted by Lanka ...against .... yes, you guessed it ... none other than India
