Right now for me it is the opposite. After so many years in Thailand I can say the thrill is gone and those foreign habits that were once cute can now be irritating.
I'm learning i love being a stranger... No matter where, i'd prefer in Asia, but it's the Netherlands at the moment.
Ok, now i'll try to write something more sensible. I notice that more I move, less time i need to get over the cultural shock. I remember it took me the longest to get used to living in China - about 6 months. I was 21, and it was the first time I was away from home for a long time, i guess that was mostly the reason. And of course those foreign habits... Anyway, by the end of my second year I didn't want to go home. The cultural shock was waiting there for me - yes, back in my own country!!! So I quickly found another place where I could study a bit more, and that was Taiwan. Going there was like getting back home.
Since then, my sense of 'home' is complitely mixed up. I can feel home about anywhere, and I cannot distinguish between the foreign and non-foreign. In fact, what irritates me the most, are the habits of my own countrymen/women
INTE. Thats just to weird,,I have always wondered what "culture Shock" was,,I have never noticed it and didn't really know what it was,,I still don't.
But do understand now what it is anyway,,Thank you.
I started to wander around the world when I was 15 yrs old, and always went where ever I could, [money allowing] or where ever I wanted to, Feel kinda sorry for those that have it cause I always feel comfortable when I arrive at whereever.
Its possible to get a second wave of culture shock long after you've already adjusted to life overseas. _________________ You've got another five seconds say something really outragious

Thats a good point. The initial shock of new sights, sounds, foods etc..can wear off pretty quickly--to be be replaced later when you learn the language and really see how things work. _________________ Asia Expats Forum Expat Friends Dating
Its after that second wave that people usually crack. This can happen years after you've settled in. _________________ You've got another five seconds say something really outragious

REVERSE or RE-ENTRY shock. It's often more difficult to go home. You expect things to be different when you go abroad .... but when you come home, no one expects you to have changed _________________ EXPAT IN CHINA
