"I prefer to change my money during the morning and before lunch time and I use the International Travel/Money Changer just past Margarita Station...
You can use Norma's money changer but would advise during daylight hours only...
Get a hotel near the action and stisk to the well worn paths - just avoid the darker areas as undesirables may lurk there... "

Those statements would not apply to Thailand. There is nowhere to avoid at any time

Sad but true - the seedy type have had longer to develop their skills in the PI compared to Thailand - not saying it doesn't happen in Thailand but saying it's less prevailent there...
I would say the proportion of seedy/crook types are heavily in favour of the PI, just look at their politicians and the average Joe thinks hey if it's good enough for them it's good enough for me...
One problem is if the mugs didn't keep getting caught out then maybe the crooks would move on but oh no the mugs just keep falling over themselves no matter how many warnings are put up...

Having said that, i have had no problems in the PI at all...
If one was keep their wits about them they would see the trouble coming from a mile off and avoid it...
It also helps to be polite to the locals as I have seen guys targeted because of the way they treat the locals...

With the rise of consumerism in thailand and the increased dependance on economic survival, crime rates will invariably increase and perhaps will not be as safe oneday. The price we pay for "progress"
