Kunming itself has about 4.5 million people. Trucks & motorcycles aren't allowed in the downton city centre.
I'm sure there would be some great offroad places for bikes out of town, however my international & Australian licences aren't accepted in China.
I'll have to wait until I'm back in Thailand to hire a motorcycle. I was in Pai last June. That was great riding up in the hills of Mae Hong Song Province _________________ EXPAT IN CHINA
I have an Australian driver's licence. I checked into getting a Chinese licence in Kunming.
A medical examination is required and a written test. No practical driving test is required.
The written test is by computer. Problem for me is it is in Chinese, though I believe I could take a Chinese person with me to translate. A 90% pass rate is required. First I need to know someone Chinese that has passed the test recently, and can explain the rules to me.
You can take the written test in English, a friend of mine has taken it and passed (after couple attempts). Problem is the english translation is not very good, so half the time you'll have to guess what they're trying to say.
I do miss driving, but frankly I've no desire of driving in China, especially in Beijing, the drivers are impatient and rude, no one gives way to anyone, there's just this general disrespect to all others on the road, everyone's trying to get in front of you. The same goes to pedestrians and people on bikes, I've learnt to follow the crowd when crossing the street or run for my life, and I'd had several near misses where the drivers decided it's rather amusing to see me jump and do backwards acrobats on the pavement. It never used to be like that, I grew up in Beijing when the traffic was far better, but then, private cars were unheard of in those days....
