Hi, I'm wondering if any other foreigners living in China have licenses or drive and what your experiences have been. I feel like after driving here, I'll be arrested when I go back to the states and drive.
Also wondering what you had to do to get your license. I have heard some people say that it was easy, just go down and fill out some papers. Others, (like myself) had to go through a whole mess of stuff to get it. _________________ http://groups.msn.com/HangingoutinChina/messages.msnw

I have an Australian driver's licence. I checked into getting a Chinese licence in Kunming.
A medical examination is required and a written test. No practical driving test is required.
The written test is by computer. Problem for me is it is in Chinese, though I believe I could take a Chinese person with me to translate. A 90% pass rate is required. First I need to know someone Chinese that has passed the test recently, and can explain the rules to me. _________________ EXPAT IN CHINA

I passed the driver's licence test a few days ago in April, maybe I can act as your interpreter when you are taking the test.It is easy to common Chinese, but to foreigners, even after translation they may not know what the question is asking, for there are many transportation rules tested here.Maybe the government will not permit me act as your interpreter, they may designate their own to u,that sure will cost u a lot of money! _________________ let us enjoy the life, endevour and get pay back of the life
Do the drivers in China follow obey the traffic laws? Do the police enforce the traffic laws?? _________________ Asia Expats Forum Expat Friends Dating

Mr. Wocca
first, you looked strong, that's the reason I do not want to teach u because I am a bit frightened by you.
second,it really costs to teach u and perhaps u can not afford that.
third,if I decide to teach u,I do not concern about how much it costs, because I have not been to kunming and it is a chance to experience, and it does not have effect to my plan wether u pay much or not. _________________ let us enjoy the life, endevour and get pay back of the life

That all sounds very noble of you _________________ EXPAT IN CHINA
By the way, if a Chinese person accompanied me to translate whilst doing the computer written test, and that person already knew the correct answers ... then, I wouldn't have to be taught a thing.

You took the words right out of my mouth. It's all just a legal formality anyways. The new drivers here are frightened and the experienced are overconfident. They all break the rules the the police only stop a very small percentage. They couldn't man a force to stop all violators...even in China. Regardless...I look forward to my drive to work and home everyday. It's a hell of allot of fun...
I drove around for 6 months (thailand) without a registration, insurance, license or anything. The problem is if you have an accident then you better have everthing legal.
Things are changing here a little bit--police have regular stops all motorcycle and they actually check car registrations sometimes.--mostly looking for a few extra baht _________________ Asia Expats Forum Expat Friends Dating
I haven't driven a car for about three years. I don't miss it at all. I live on campus in China. I can walk from my apartment to the classroom very, very slow in about ten minutes. On the way, I usually buy a Snickers chocolate bar and sit down to chew on it, and compose myself before entering the classroom.
