I understand your view entirely, I lived in Shenzhen for over 2 years, worked in Dongguan for a few months too. I never experienced anything bad enough to make me want to leave until I came to Haerbin. We loved our time in Southern China and we're looking forward to returning. Shanghai and Nanjing are also great places to be.
But the people in the North have a very different attitude towards others.
The local government has a different attitude and they're very forward in delivering their views and discrimination.
We invested a lot of time and money to our project here in Haerbin, we know where not to go in the city now and more importantly when not to go! We're halfway through our time here and we can't wait to leave. _________________
I didn't realize there was such a difference betwen north and south.
There a similar tendancy here in thailand for thais to try to get as much as they can out of foreigners-- double tiered pricing exists in many establishments.
But certainly there are no places here that one needs to avoid out of fear of beeing abused. _________________ Asia Expats Forum Expat Friends Dating

Hi Simon -
I understand your viewpoint too, and am sorry that you are experiencing the negative side of life here as an expat . I also understand the feeling of "investing" a lot of time and money, and not willing to just up and leave ...
Perhaps the South is relatively more open, due to the proximity with HK, and also due to the rapid development that has taken place here, especially in the Guangdong region. I do know that when I visited Beijing, the attitude of the immigration officer stamping me in was quite bad, despite the fact I had a "Z" visa ... he took about 15 minutes to stamp me in. Compare that to the one minute or so that they take at the Lou-hu border between HK and China to stamp foreigners back into China! So perhaps the government attitude is different up there.
Unlike the US, where the north is generally more open than the south ...

Well, I do know that the local government in the South is encouraging foreigners to come and work in China, possibily due to the booming economy down here (Dongguan and some other cities nearby are literally boomtown). This may not be the case up north though (probably isn't, from what Simon said). The north isn't going through such rapid industralization as far as I know ...
And this next comment is not germane to the issue, but I must admit that Chinese ladies are the cutest/prettiest females on the planet (for the most part;)).
That one came when I saw "master race". I dont think any race is master race, but "cute" is a personal perception, so I figured I'd post it
Ok, sorry for the commercial break, back to the discussion
