it is simply aweb directory-- i wonder what entries they object to
Oh, anything that promotes freedom, democracy, independent thought, superstition - that's religion to the rest of us, anything with even a hint or suggestion that the Chinese are not the 'master race'..
And the list goes on, I'm sure they just make em up as they go along.
Damn, even Google.com is blocked from time to time, though not of course Google.cn! which is an entirely different thing. _________________

Like all things in life, there's always a way around the problem, for all you folks in China, armed with a credit card, try the followng for $50 a year
lets not confuse "master race" with world dominance
Do the chinese think they are really a master race? i.e genetically better than everyone else?? _________________ Asia Expats Forum Expat Friends Dating
I DO know though that I cannot access the Expat Web Directory unless I use a proxy . That site did send me an email when I signed up, but I haven't recieved it . Same happened with this site ... and I suspect the problem is NOT with the site, rather, the internet ...

That's a fair question Mike and one that's not easily answered, it depends on whose voice you're listening to. I've lived, worked and played in several of the larger, more cosmopolitan cities throughout China and not really come across it very much. However, in the smaller, more rural areas of China I encounter it everyday.
We've lived in Haerbin for almost a year now and the Chinese attitude towards any and all other cultures here is pretty bad, they toe the party line, most only think when they're told to think and only think what they're told to think and that's to tolerate the foreigner but exploit him at all costs.
This is practiced by all, from your pedicab driver through to all government run organizations, what's more, it's done publicly and unashamedly, most hotels and public services here have prices for Chinese and prices for Foreigners emblazoned above their doors.
The foreigner pays a minimum of double the Chinese rate, if you're brave enough to ask why then you'll be asked to leave, forcibly ejected from the premises (not a nice experience when you have your girlfriend with you and it's the local registrars office) or the cops will arrive and arrest you for causing a disturbance and attempting to damage/taint/pollute/destroy Chinese heritage, customs and belief, locked in a small, dirty, dank cell with a boat load of drunks for four hours, finger-printed and questioned without access to a lawyer or phone call and thrown out in the street at 2am with an order to pay a hefty fine within 24 hours or risk all your permits being cancelled and deportation within 7 days. All for asking a polite but definately frustrated why!
Sure, spitting in China is a done deal, here it's everywhere and unfortunately in winter that big booga aint going anywhere for 6 months, but when they're spitting at you yelling obscenities about your culture and your mom, then there's certainly something wrong here.
My experience has been slightly different from yours though. I live in Dongguan, Guandong provice, and it's basically a factory town - there's money to be made here, and plenty of rich locals, but the majority of the people are extremely poor migrant workers.
I have not ever had the experience of having to pay double prices for the most part. And I hang out in a lot of local (read REALLY local) nightclubs, bars, outdoor BBQ's, etc ... There have been exceptions a couple of times, but for the most part, I was NEVER cheated. In fact, the estabilishments always did their best to let me know of any special deals going on!!!
On the flip side, I've had several American friends complain that this happened to them .
As far as the culture deal goes, I've never ONCE had any local abuse me. And I've lived in Dongguan for over two years now, and like I said, I tend to hang around the local spots a lot ... In fact, I've had more abuse hurled at me in the US than in China!
Again on the flip side, I've heard some African Americans complain of this, and I have also heard that there is some bias towards individuals of darker skin (and this applies to Chinese as well).
I am not Caucasian, and not Chinese either. I am originally Indian (the only "US" in me is my English, which came from spending around 5 years in the Southern US, with a stint up north). Does this make a difference ...
Now, note that all this is what happens "outwardly" - I have no way of knowing how people REALLY feel. Well actually I do - there HAVE been some instances where I got the feeling I was not welcome in certain situations, but I was NEVER (read never) physcially or verbally abused, and always treated (outwardly) at least with utmost respect.
And again, these instances have been FEW and FAR in between.
So bottom line is that foreigners are foreigners, no matter which country we're in - I think ALL this depends on one's attitude, and how one approaches one's situation.
Just one person's opinion ... let others ring in too!

And this next comment is not germane to the issue, but I must admit that Chinese ladies are the cutest/prettiest females on the planet (for the most part;)).
That one came when I saw "master race". I dont think any race is master race, but "cute" is a personal perception, so I figured I'd post it
Ok, sorry for the commercial break, back to the discussion
