I will be in China(Shanghai) on my company business trip shortly. I'll stay in Portman Hotel Shanghai. This is my first business trip to China since I started working for my company 4 years ago. I've been waiting this chance for long time.
But one problem comes out, that is I don't speak Chinese, I will try to take cab and hand portman address to the taxi driver.. but the bill probably will be more than 500 HKD
Many taxi drivers are honest and hardworking, and you'll be surprised to find some of them actually can speak some basic English. If you can try to get local help when you get in the taxi, like hotel porter or your business associates. No doubt some drivers will try to trick you, but you get that sometimes even if you do speak Chinese. I haven't been to Shanghai for over 10 years, heard it's really modern and well run, but some of my friends prefer the chaotic Beijing. Good luck!

Oh, welcome to Shanghai.. I work in Shanghai foreign company, once a month we have our Manager from Head office come to Shanghai, and we pick him up by using www.asialimo.com and rent for 1,2 days.. then send our manager back to Pudong airport.. it's pretty easy... coz everybody is too busy to drive him everywhere
I've found, when travelling, it's usually possible to find a taxi driver willing to quote you a price up front. The price will of course be slightly higher than the fare you'd end up paying on the meter, but doing that might let you relax a bit more, and put you in a better bargaining position if you feel that you might be cheated. _________________ Treehouse Bar in Zhongdian, (Yunnan) | Information about China
