I'll be flying from Bangkok to Saigon around New Year's and from Hanoi to Vientiane about 3 weeks later.

Any tips on where to get the best deals on these flights?

Hi,
It's easy. For Bangkok- Hochiminh, Thaiair is your best choice.
Hanoi - Vientian, should choose Lao airline to get the best rate.

I left Vietnam 4.5 months ago. Had a blast. Flew in and out on Vietnam Air. I organized it with a BKK travel agent from Korea. They told me I would be going in on Lufthansa and out on Lao Air. When I bought the ticket it turned out to be Vietnam Air for both flights. No big problem. I just couldn't collect the Star Alliance miles on Lufthansa. Would have been minimal anyway.
