i know in burma, they do it for 200 kyats(which is like 20cents USD), to free a bird(small sparrow) for good fortune, also just outside the pagoda temples, need to get richard gere to come and charge to his credit card. of course the trick is that the birds are trained to fly back to the cage after roaming around for awhile. _________________ Photo of my sponsored orphan in Myanmar.

The next time you see one of these places, buy one and don't let it go, maybe put in a little box or bag, then tell the person you are not going to let it go but rather you family loves the soup that the pigeon will be used for.
and don't forget to thank them very much as they are more expensive in the market....

In Korat they sell little sparrows to release in pairs to obtain a favour from Lady Mo, the Korat heroine, who is believed to let you win in the lottery etc. if you please her. Their freedom lasts until next morning when they're caught again for another sale.
