By all means the Guilin area is a must see for it's natural beauty. However as a tourist, I was quite put off by it's people in general. The beggers were very agressive to the point of physically grabbing you, very dishonest taxi services, and equally dishonest tour operators. Granted I am sure this dosen't hold true for EVERYBODY there, but I my case these people were quick to take full advantage of me (the tourist) by overcharging for services.
Yes, go to Guilin, just be very cautious with all things related to tourism there.
