One of the best new features of phpBB3 is the "view active topics" search function, set at 7 days it always gives me a good overview of what's going on. Set at one year or so it shows me at the rear end the topics that should be considered for archiving into subforums. At the moment I use as archive the old forum, just delete articles that became irrelevant in the new forum, they're left in the old which can still be read easily. _________________ K O R A T - I N F O
The RC4 was released last week. Quite a big pack to update. With the automatic update I had a problem with a file demanding 35 bytes more than my host allows without extra charge. So I did manually. Works fine but I cannot see the changes I notice on a fresh installation of RC4. C'est la vie!
But I found out how easy it is to make a new installation or second installation and have that use my existing database. So I calculate, if I'm stuck in an update I can just delete the forum, make a fresh installation and connect the database. For example at present it can be accessed and used at www.korat-info.com and at www.koratexpat.com two separate forums using the same database.

Just playing around!
EXCELLANT
You are learning how it works and before you know it will be programming PHP
Beware there will be updates that require updating the database--and remember to keep timely backups so you can always rebuild your site within a few hours _________________ Asia Expats Forum Expat Web Directory Expat Friends Dating
How easy is it to set up, install, run etc a php board?
It looks as if I will need to do so next year (nah, not on any of the topics here, or even close), and I like the appearace of php compared with some of the other boards I have seen.
What are the problems, or would I be better with a different format, or else getting someone to do it for me.?
(Not keen on the latter if I can avoid it.) _________________ The Middle Eastern states aren't nations; they're quarrels with borders.- P. J. O'Rourke
it is really quite easy once you understand a few fundamentals. I am sure that koratcat can confirm that.
Thre are some issues with the free version of PHP that you need to consider--one is SEO (Search Engine Friendliness)--Do you want your site to be easily indexed by the search engines? or it doesnt matter?
The objective is that I am assisting a pal who has set up a small manufacturing company.
The idea of a message board is to allow the customers to exchange information, plus ask question of the makers ( thats us!) that may be of use to other customers.
As the total number of users will be small ( a few dozen a year) it wont be a massive board.
As all the customers will be given the link, it is immaterial whether or not it can be found by search engines.
But, I want a simple system (One I can manage without having to get a degree in it!) and I like to support any free software.
Plus the php board layout is ideal for the purpose. _________________ The Middle Eastern states aren't nations; they're quarrels with borders.- P. J. O'Rourke

They have a website already and just want to add a section for a forum?
That should be easy and the new PHPBB3 version that Koratcat uses would work fine for you. Its free and can be installed quite easily. _________________ Asia Expats Forum Expat Web Directory Expat Friends Dating

It is really very simple to set up. Made for beginners. The arranging of the board, creating subforums, setting permissions for usergroups etc. might be a little confusing at first for beginners. Once you see the logic behind it, it goes easily as well. But most important: it is spambotsafe! And that's what every company wants. Only Mike still enjoys deleting spambot registrations.
And now there is also a working last post title mod as 3 premodded files available. Easy to install, just overwrite the originals before or after installation, then clear the cache of the templates in the latter case. Works! _________________ K O R A T - I N F O
Thanks guys. Doesnt sound too daunting.
I have no doubt that I could manage it eventually, but dont want to spend too much time on it, so want something that I can get up and running in a reasonable time.
Sounds as if this will be possible.
Oh, and when I do, dont be surprised to find me here asking more dumb questions! lol _________________ The Middle Eastern states aren't nations; they're quarrels with borders.- P. J. O'Rourke
Release Candidate 5 is out. As before lots of fixes of bugs I didn't notice anyway. But breathtaking was the automatic update itself, after I got it working.
This update merges your modifications into the new files. No reinstallations of mods necessary anymore.
RC 6 must've been before that but I missed it. They were fast in calling that back. So RC 7 can be directly updated from RC 5.
When you find out that it not only gives a lot of trouble the developers are aware of when talking about "not the smoothest update" but that the upload for the automatic update is just 30 KB less than for a new installation, and that the update will "most likely" overwrite your mods, you might go for a new installation running besides your RC 5 with the mods just connected to your database. Then you have plenty of time installing new language packs, mods etc. Problem might be that you still have to run the update pack to get your database updated.

has been set as the official date for the release of the Gold version of phpBB3.0 - I assume it won't be any different from the phpBB3.0.RC8 which got released on Dec. 1, 2007 and showed hardly any differences to the previous RC7.
That is the new version. I think this board is still running Version 2.22. It should be easy to upgrade as you don't have a lot of hacks installed.
Wrong!!
I have many hacks and upgrading will be a major pain in the ass. I have plan to upgrade now as I am busy with tons of other stuff--i just hope support for Phpbb2 continues for a long time _________________ Asia Expats Forum Expat Web Directory Expat Friends Dating
