Hi Mike,

registered already. Can you give me admin status for looking into the ACP? So far I cannot make out anything new. Must be in the admin and mod controls which seemed to be rather incomplete in the previous one.

Thanks, I'll check. The visual confirmation check seems to be better already. They should introduce the floating one, about impoossible to read for a robot.

I already learned to like the Super Moderator feature of mybb (TT). What I wish for is a possibility to block entry of a HP until extra activated for.

On my forum the spam with the registration robots was getting so crazy that since a week I changed to activation by admin. Registration that look interesting get an email from me, asking for their interest in Korat-Info. Til now everybody who answered actually posted then. Looks like a better way to build up a community.

But the spam registrations still have to be deleted one by one. Evil or Very Mad

In ACP so far new and good

prune users - dangerous but can be used to enforce some dynamics, a must post

custom profile fields - might be useful for bigger specialised boards especially for member statistics

--------------------------

Avatars they took out again, obviously to change something

Moderator Control Buttons still cannot be found

-----------------------------

Looks to me like it's still some way to the first release candidate, not to think of the final version. Sad

----------------------------------

But either I gained a lot more experience by now or they made the functions in the ACP more logic, easier to understand at first sight. Smile

phpBB 3.0.RC1, released two days ago is available. That might be a little more complete than that last beta. Can you install it for testing? Thanks

The phpBB3.0 RC 1 is up and running for testing at www.korat-info.com/BB3/

Though there was a mysterious error message about a fatal error after I was congratulated to a successful installation, everything seems to be running except

- doesn't send confirmation mail upon activation by admin,

- german language packs just don't work

+ I haven't managed yet what I'm looking to use so badly: merging topics and posts. Looks easy once understood how it's supposed to work but somehow still doesn't, maybe on my installation only. Sad

+ somehow it displays the posters information to the right of the post while everywhere else on the left. But I don't know whether that's so bad Surprised

I managed a clean install of RC1 but the conversion of the BB2 data turned up a fatal error in the PNs. Running it as my live forum now. But by yesterday the notice of the RC2 appeared. So I'll install the RC2 new as testboard and try the conversion again. They say there were a lot of problems with that and they have fixed it now. They dare to speculate that RC2 will become the gold version, but "there might be some more release candidates" . . . Laughing

My best experience from running it live is the immediate reduction of the spambot registrations to zero. Having to delete about 26 in the 20 hours before I converted made me see the remaining bugs as "nit noi ban ha". Downloading from phpbb.com on the weekend was very slow, guess lotsa people did.

I also noticed at the conversion that it is better not to make any settings to the new board before converting so it doesn't have to check every post and picture for fitting under the new criteria. Probably saves a lot of time.

RC2 installs without any problems. The Conversion runs smoothly. too. Says at the end that the search index needs to be rebuilt. Who knows how?

It has the same problem as RC1 with the indication of the last posts (and the topic starters) from the old data on the forum level though not the index page.

A question: What software to use to open the php- files with? I need that for the mod "Last Post Titles", which is just exchanging a few lines in some files.

Well, rebuilding the search index is simple: go "MAINTENANCE", then "search index" under "database" in the ACP, just delete the old "fulltext native", then you'll see a button "create index". Click that, done!

The last posts started to show correctly with poster and date after a few days operation. Don't know what had been the problem.

As for the last post titles mod, I tried to apply the changes using WebFTP in the Confixx-surface. Either I did something wrong or the mod, that was designed for the Beta 6 - dev version (downloaded from sourcefore.net), does not work with the RC2. I looked at quite a few forums on the web running RC1 or RC2 live already, none of them has the last post title display. Guess I'll have to wait for an appropriate mod.

What I could not get working yet is the "merge" function.

But altogether I would declare it safe to convert to BB3.0.RC2. Since you don't need to overwrite your BB2 forum or database, you can always return. And you don't need a second database, can be done on the same as the BB2. During install it will ask you what prefix to give the entries in the database, just don't use "php_" because that's from BB2.Laughing

And if you plan to have more than one board language installed it saves a lot of time to add the language packs to the forum software before uploading it to the server. So they get installed together with everything else. No extra hassle!

I could not find more templates yet than the two included: subsilver2 and prosilver. The latter has a great function of enlarging the script in the upper right above FAQ, a white A with up and down arrows. First click activates, second enlages, third enlarges very much, next reduces to normal again and so on. Subsilver2 doesn't have that function.

Sure it will work since the software of the old forum is not involved at all, just the data starting php_ from your database. In the conversion pack it will ask you for that. You can always change back to the old forum by just changing names. All the changes on the display will stay with the old forum. If you cannot manage to install them new or even better you might just switch back to old and the pleasure of deleting spambot registrations. Razz

Forgot to tell that RC3 was released already two weeks ago. Lotsa fixes of things I never used anyway and therefore cannot tell the difference, no breathtaking new features.

Just extremely insignificant things still not working like display of the editing of a post. Can be selected in the ACP but doesn't work. According to their change log they did improve security even more. Still I didn't have one spammer yet since I'm running it live.

What comes in quite convenient is the possibility to "spread out" by installing more and more subforums rather than let topics run down the forum index. Only very few guys complain that it is more complicated, most praise new features. The less posting at the moment I attribute rather to the summer hole. The number of members who log in remains stable. Good that you can monitor this on the member list now.
