The 2 tier pricing really kills me.

How can they get away with openly publishing seperate rates for foreigners and locals??

There are restaurants here who do not put any prices on the menus walk walk

Over here they dont openly publish it any more. It used to be officially published in China around the 1960's, I think but not any more. BUT, it still exists.

I can barter my way around this crap, partly because I'm Asian myself (this nonsense happens in India too) and partly because I've been here a while, and partly b/c I'm not about to put up with that BS ... but there are some expats here who just get duped - they think life's like what it was in the States, and I can't really blame them for feeling that way, and it sometimes makes me mad. But, I then tell myself they should have known better and researched more Wink.

Plenty of local restaurants here dont put prices on their menus either, and if they do, they don't show the foreigner (unless they think he/she knows whats going on, or unless they like him/her). Wink

That being said I must also say there are plenty of people here in China who will do what they can to help foreigners, and not dupe them. Smile

wah!!! I really dont think I could have done that.

...but then, once I moved into an apartment in Sydney and didn't inform the electical company. The lights and electricity were on... I just sort of figured they'd send the bill- when they didn't I didn't think too much about it and just went on for over 2 years using my free electricity until one day it was cut off.

I actually thought that was a bonus- 2 years of free electricity! Turned out they could only back charge us for 6 months estimated usage (about $300 AUD).

So yeah sometimes life is just finders keepers.

I wouldn't have wanted to be around when it WAS cut off though (nasty shock?) ... Very Happy

Actually they sent a letter a week before 'to the householder' so needless to say I just ignored it! It was fine as the energy people operated about a block away so it was back on within the hour- at no extra cost. (hope we don't have problems getting electricty connected when we get back to Australia Embarassed )

Now on to the pc mistake thing
I have been living here for ages and been cheated, ripped off, scammed and shaftedea thousand times--so no id di not inform the shop of the mistake in fact I got out of their ASAP.. I fully expected them to find out the eror and somehow charge my card or whatever-but nothing.

This shop--although small was in a very prominent, high traffic area and they did tons of business- so its not like I was putting a mom and pop out of business

Never been up there yet. Too much temptation to trek. Or is it not like that?

I understand what you mean about all the rip-offs. I guess that ma and pa angle is significant too. Fair enough, I guess. occasion

I exchanged money in Malaysia earlier this year and they gave me twice what they were supposed to - I pointed it out but they waved me away. I guess they thought I was wrong. I couldn't even take the transaction back as they wouldn't exchange back into yen. uhm

I must admit though, throughout the tirade I felt like a polite guest turning down a generous gift, only hoping I'd get it in the end Twisted Evil

Many restaurants, bars and clubs in Osaka openly advertise cheaper cover charges, buffet tickets, party rates etc for foreigners. occasion

Wonder if the Japanese are p*ssed off about the two-tiered pricing system? uhm

Shocked I didnt know that happened in Japan!! Guess they WANT foreigners to come to their nation?

Nothing like this in HK - everyone pays the same price (unless you are bartering on the road - in which case it's each man for himself).

Lucky you, Hewer.

If it was me, I'd gladly accept the money and walk off Razz. And apparently that's what you really felt like doing yourself. Wink

too much temptation? dont get that but there is not a lot to do in Chaingrai city--the trekking 10 years ago was pretty poor as the ropute were over used--we used to go by motorcycles and find trekkers in the same villages. so I'll bet now its even worse.

Laos would be the place to trek-and burma if possible.

I wouldn't go that far Sad

I know that Brits/Aussies/Americans etc of Asian descent are not regarded as foreigners in some of those deals. It's all about the way you look.

Slightly off topic, but a Canadian friend of mine (Korean descent) had a phone interview for a sales job and was told to come down to the office and basically sign up. When he got there, there were frowns galore and they told him that they wanted a "real foreigner". Racist jerks.

My wife was going to apply for a job a couple of years ago but noticed in the job description that it was for "white women only". Now, in how many countries worldwide would that fly? Shocked

Hewer, I agree - I was gonna say Caucasians, but didnt say it ... Not sure why, since I'm normally so politically incorrect. finger

That sort of thing would fly in China, for one Wink.

Plenty of schools here want "native" English speakers from the UK, US, Australia or NZ (yes, the countries are mentioned) - and plenty also want people of Caucasian descent. This is also clearly mentioned in their ads ... guess Swedish people can speak English better than Indians or Singaporeans (or other native English speakers) uhm

So, that sort of thing goes on a lot around here ... as far as the "white woman" deal, I keep seeing ads which say "we want pretty white girls to shoot a commerical" ... uhm ... this is in China, where there are a ton of pretty Chinese girls (who aren't regarded as pretty by the locals sometimes).

Geez ...
