Apparently, it is...... things started getting bad after 9-11 & the bird flu didn't help..... altho I love the cultural heritage there & the warm people, there are some problems with infrastructure, ie heavy traffic, poor public bus service, garbage, crumbling heritage buildings..... _________________ My photo journal web site:

I've probably been to Penang 10-15 times on visa runs back in the 1990's. I always liked it but it was obvious even then that the city was in decay.
foreigners living in Thailand now have the option of getting visas in Myanmar, Laos and Cambodia and that might have contributed a little to Penangs decline. |

The bombings in Bali etc haven't helped either. There are many Aussies who are afraid to travel anywhere in SE Asia now because of that? esp to Muslim countries.

I'm not saying it's true, but it's just the perception out there.... I know my family & friends here, who are not as informed as you & I, are concerned about me traveling to a Muslim country.... you notice it hasn't stopped me though _________________ My photo journal web site:

I've been staying at Eden Fairway condos in Batu Ferringhi...... At first, I had wanted to be in the city as I planned to spend a lot of time there, but I couldn't find suitable accomodations - I wanted a balcony & pool ;o) Now I'm kinda glad I'm at the beach as it's quieter & cooler.... I still go to the city by local bus almost every day.... are you familiar with Penang?? _________________ My photo journal web site:

No, Penang has never been a suspected hide-out for extremists. Penang is actually the grassroot of the opposition party DAP.
When you talk about Kelantan however...
But every country has its black sheep. Striving for modernity while reaching a plateau with culture and traditions is not easy. But overall I think (I hope) things will get better. 10, 20, 50 years, who knows. At least people are willing to speak up now more than before.
Err I'm not an expat, I just couldn't help myself when I saw the Penang thread |

extremists are black sheep? Not a good comparison. Extremeists try to convert all the other sheep to be like them -or else!! |

Welcome dsalish
a couple months ago we had a female poster who spent lots of time in Penang every year. Username rainy--you can see her posts-I suggest you send her a PM and see if any response-if not I can email her and maybe she can help you to make some connections in Penang. There are other penang members as well --maybe someone will speak out _________________ Asia Expats Forum

I would like to contact anyone who has been married to a Thai lady and lived in Bangkok for a fair time, as fore warned is fore armed as they say.
I am in such a position but have only been here a few months and married a few weeks so finding all related info seems to be very varied by asking Thai people, ask 6 different people and get 6 different answers.
Need to know what rights I have, what I can do now I couldnt before I was married, can I buy a property other than a Condo, such as buying land and building a house on it, etc etc. |
