In many cases, yes.
For some of the poorer families, a foreign relative is a walking cash machine.
Many think that money is so easily come by in the West that we always have loads to spare.
(Of course, they dont understand our prices, taxes, and many other things about western life.)
At the same time, a lot of the poor families are too proud to ask for anything and some will decline offers of gifts or cash, except for special reasons. (To put someone through higher education, for example.)
Again, the situation is different with the better off.
They, or many of them, will behave as someone of a similar age would do in the West. _________________ The Middle Eastern states aren't nations; they're quarrels with borders.- P. J. O'Rourke
Divorce is illegal in the Philippines.
However, they do have annulments, but not easy to get.
They do recognise a divorce that is legally obtained in other countries.
However, it is best to be sure before you mary. _________________ The Middle Eastern states aren't nations; they're quarrels with borders.- P. J. O'Rourke
That's right Alan... but you can get marriage annulment from the church... if they granted you that then you can marry again if you like... if you marry the guy it means you marry the family also... I guess it is sign of respect to the elders and in- laws as well...
That's why you have to think 100x if you want to marry your boyfriend... it is hard to get an annulment and it took many years... _________________ “to never stop dreaming until your hair turns gray… that’s the essence of living”
I believe that the Philippines has a Civil annulment, quite apart from the church one.
That, I am told is recognised for another civil marriage but may not be recognised by the Church who may not permit a future church wedding.
In any case, it is best to be 100% sure before going into what is supposed to be a lifetime commitment.
So thats similar to the situation here except I have never heard of a Thai declining a gift.
What about the religious thing about divorce. is it true, tha once married, you cannot divorce a Philippino ?
true. I saw that as a cause of many problems whilst living there. Nothing worse than forcing people to stay married who don't want to be. It's a Church method of control. Although it's not really Roman Catholicism...it's a home-grown version that has been modified by older animist beliefs, very similiar to the Thais have their distinctive version of Buddhism.

Seems like most of my philippino friends here cheat on their wives. hmmm Maybe they dont have to worry about a messy, expensive divorce?
The old Philippine laws were very one-sided.
A man could get an annulment due to his wofes adultery, but a woman couldnt get one if her husband was unfaithful.
Also, a guy beating his wife wasnt grounds for an annulment.
That has changed, but only gradually, and with some reluctance on the part of many guys to alter their behavoiur.
Men having mistresses is common and "shows their virility".
Also, most want virgin brides and not, as some say, "soiled goods".
Women are supposed to remain chaste, and certainly not play around when married.
That is the main reason that so many Filipinas stay virgins until late, compared to western women.
It seems that you know alot about our culture... I am very happy to know that... but you see we have a church annulment now and it is very famous with lots of our movie stars here... it was very expensive and long process... the great thing about it is you can get married in the church again if you like...
Yap... everything you've said here are all true and it is fascinating ... we have one sided law sometimes...we still have lots of martyr woman here... sad to say. _________________ “to never stop dreaming until your hair turns gray… that’s the essence of living”
