phpbb3 is the newest free beta version of the same forum used here at asia expats
some nive new things are subforums and attachments allowed.
Klaus and rahul should take a look and we all need to start planning for an eventual upgrade to this nice new software.
anyone need to test admin functions just create an account there and i can give you access to the control panel
upgrade path not yet defined but i know i will have problems as i haphazardly installed many mods here that probably wont work with the new version--not to mention the blog mod _________________ Asia Expats Forum Expat Friends Dating

Hi Mike -
I'll sign up soon ...
However it has been my experience that PhpBB2 is inherently unstable, at least when running in a Post Nuke environment. So if you were to ever upgrade the whole site to a Nuke environment, you might have some most annoying problems.
That being said, it seems to be doing just fine in the standalone format (as in on this forum).
Looks good to me as far as I have tested it by now. Gives people a lot of possibilities to play with their creativity by coloring text parts easier, uploading and inserting files etc.. I wonder if there is also a mod that helps doing simple graphics directly on it.
I can imagine - though we should test it first - that I for example don't have to do a complicated upgrade, since i don't have any mods installed, but just upload my backup into it. I found out from my 2.0.21, that backing up on the PC and recover from there is simple.
klaus
it is not going to work like that. The upgrade will be more like replacing the files on youe server with the new phpbb3 files and then running a database script to update your database

in your case should be no problem
"Database script to update the database"? And how to do that?
Let's try it with my site!
I'm sure it's an improvement. Since the whole structure will be changed by adding the subforums feature I should not wait too long, better use the new structure as early as possible. _________________ Thailand Forum - Korat Forum..
The upgrade is not available yet--only the beta version which i installed as a test forum--give it a couple months or if you cant wait you would have to start all over again with the beta
phpBB 3 seems to have a big different from the older version.
However, it is risky to use it before it is officially release as stable version. _________________ http://www.stupiak.com | http://www.vincentchow.net
I think it's a huge improvement from phpbb2, just be carefully running the beta on a live forum.
I installed it myself and I had a cookie problem/redirect problem. I just scrapped it for phpbb2. I can wait. _________________ Political Forum|Webmaster Forums

I agree.... huge improvement and worth waiting for--although if I had to do it all over again I would have bought a VB license and I still feel that one day I will have to migrate to VB _________________ Asia Expats Forum Expat Friends Dating
The uploading feature also has some downsides as i saw on other forums who allow uploading to their server: the transfer volume is increased heavily by the downloading of pics when people open the forum. That can cause your site to be blocked until you paid for the excess transfer volume.
So some restrict the downloading to registered members which makes the forum not interesting to read - without the pics, unless you want to register.
Others restrict the uploading size which causes the problem of resizing.
The question is who are the users of the forum. If they are mainly old guys, it might be too confusing to run a lot of subforums and introduce many new features.
And even as admin or mod you gotta learn a lot new with that version. Introducing all new features at the same time might be difficult. They should have some controls to allow opening one feature at a time.

Hi Klaus
I think they do havde some controls for example you can disable the uploading feature. But i don't know you can let certain members upload etc.
The subforums I love- I think for example it would work very well if I had for emple a subforum under thailand called "korat" --totally moderated by you for example--then you would not need your own forum-tou could put your own ads in the subforum etc and we would all benefit from a larger userbase--

Hi Klaus -
One way to get around the issue you mentioned in the first paragraph is set a limit on the size of pictures that can be uploaded. I know this is doable with avatars etc, and I'm pretty sure one should be able to set a limit for uploaded images somewhere too ... (though I've not tried it personally).
I didnt do this initially with avatars (well actually I just recently resolved a problem with my site - users couldnt upload custom images at all but that's resolved now) ... and then someone uploaded a mammoth image, and well, then I saw I'd missed something ...
Of course, the problem is that some users may simply link to "external" images using the URL method but this shouldn't really slow your forums down that much (the picture just may take a while longer to display).
As for the subforum deal, I agree with both Klaus and Mike ...
Klaus, yep it may end up getting confusing if there are too many subforums.
Mike, at the same time, yes, it's nice to have subforums so the main forum page doesnt look extremely lengthy.
Guess a middle ground should be reached, only have so many sub forums ...
Yeah, the subforums are a nice feature. Just need a bit of tweaking, and too many are always bad, in my opinion. _________________ Political Forum|Webmaster Forums
