I just thought of posting this piece of information which will be useful to those who are planning to migrate to Australia under the General Skilled Migration Program and are unsure of the points test requirements.
From 1 Sept 2007, the passmark for General Skilled Migration (GSM) visas are as follows:
There are 12 criterions in the General Skilled Migration Program.
Occupation
Specialised Professional or Trade professional requiring “job specific” degrees or certificates (Gain 60 points)
General Professional requiring a general degree (Gain 50 points)
Other General Skilled Professional requiring diploma or Advanced diploma (Gain 40 points)
* Other than possessing an appropriate skilled occupation, applicants must also have mandatory work experience in a skilled occupation for at least 12 out of the last 24 months.
Age
18 – 29 Years (Gain 30 points)
30 – 34 Years (Gain 25 points)
35 – 39 Years (Gain 20 points)
40 – 44 Years (Gain 15 points)
English
Proficient English (Gain 25 points)
- At least 7.0 in each of the four test components (speak, read, write, listen) of the IELTS Test
- No exemptions for specified passport holders.
Competent English (Gain 15 points)
- At least 6.0 in each of the four test components (speak, read, write, listen) of the IELTS Test
- Passport holders from United Kingdom, United States of America, Canada, Ireland, or New Zealand are automatically considered to have ‘competent English’.
Vocational English (Gain 15 points)
- At least 5.0 in each of the four test components (speak, read, write, listen) of the IELTS Test
Concessional Competent English (Gain 15 points)
- An average band score of at least 5.5 for the four test components (speak, read, write, listen) of the IELTS Test
Specific Work Experience
Worked in the nominated 60-points occupation or a closely related occupation for at least 3 out of the last 4 years. (Gain 10 points)
Applicant has worked in a 60, 50 or 40-points occupation on the SOL (not necessarily in their nominated occupation) for 3 out of the last 4 years. (Gain 5 points)
Australian Work Experience
Employed in Australia in the nominated skilled occupation or a closely related occupation for at least 12 months out of the last 4 years. (Gain 10 points)
Completed a ‘professional year’ in the nominated skilled occupation or a closely related occupation for at least 12 months out of the last 4 years. (Gain 10 points)
MODL (Migration Occupation Demand List)
Applicants with occupations on the MODL and who has a job offer from an eligible Australian employer who had at least 10 full-time employees over the past 2 financial years. (Gain 20 points)
Applicants with occupations on the MODL but who has no Australia job offer. (Gain 15 points)
Australian Qualifications
Completed a PhD following minimum of 2 years of full-time study while physically present in Australia. (Gain 25 points)
Completed an Australian Masters or Honors Degree (at least upper second class level) after 2 academic years of study following completion of an Australian bachelor’s degree as a result of at least 1 year study in Australia (at least 3 years in all) (Gain 15 points)
Completed an Australian degree, diploma or trade qualification as a result of minimum of 2 years full-time study in Australia. (Gain 5 points)
Regional Study
Completed a qualification as a result of studying and living for 2 years at an educational institution in a regional area or a low population growth metropolitan area. (Gain 5 points)
Designated Language
Holds an overseas tertiary qualification conducted in a 'designated language' specified. (Gain 5 points)
Accredited as a interpreter (level 3) NAATI in a community language. (Gain 5 points)
Skilled Spouse / Partner
The spouse satisfies basic requirements for age, English language, qualification, nominated occupation and recent work experience. (Gain 5 points)
State/Territory Nomination
Application for a:
Skilled – Sponsored (subclass 176 or 886); or
Skilled – Regional Sponsored (subclass 475 or 487) visa;
and was nominated by a State/Territory government. (Gain 10 points)
Designated Area Sponsorship
Application for a:
Skilled – Regional Sponsored (subclass 475 and 487) visa
If sponsored by an eligible relative (parent, sibling, non-dependent child, uncle/aunt, nephew/niece, grandparent or first cousin, inclusive of adoptive and step relationships) who resides in a designated area in Australia. (Gain 25 points) _________________ Nancy Ng
