Yes, I also think that the Japanese are very racist,,but then most people are, some more than others, but then I have noticed the same quality of racism in blacks too. They always seem to notice color.
It's a toss up between Japan and Thailand, only reason why Japan wins out is because I spent most of my life learning about the culture and language, Thailand I discovered late. The Thai People are more friendlier than the Japanese people, but the latter have a better head for things...
Do you find the Japanese more racist? I've been turned down entry into Japanese establishments because I was with black friends.
Are u sure it was because you were with blacks, not because all of you were not welcome there??

It's hard not to notice color when the signs read: No Blacks Allowed.

Are you sure it wasn't just because of your Black friends?
Personally, I've never had that happen to me in Japan, and in the very few instances that I was denied entry, it was more along the lines of keeping Geijin in general out , as opposed to ordinary blatant racism and skin color. _________________ "Experience is Everything"

Can you PLEASE explain that very extremely silly statement ?
Believe it or not, there are Black people that read, and are members of this Forum......

Yes, it was definitely a color issue...as they would let me in and other whites, but barred my black friends from entering. Obviously, I chose not to stay at these establishments. As most of my friends were black, it impacted on me as well. This was in the late 80's and hopefully they've progressed beyond that by now and I'm glad you've not had to experience it yourself.

Where did you go? Was it in Tokyo, or elsewhere in Japan?
I had no problems getting into places, either by myself or with other people, but then again, I only went to places in Shibuya and Roppongi, and I also can speak Japanese ( Albiet still on an intermediate level ), so I guess It was the curiousity factor...... I was treated more along the lines of how a pretty Asian woman would be in America...
I guess in your case, they may have had problems with Blacks in the past, or didn't want any possible problems ( I guess they see too many movies from Hollywood.. )
Late 80's you say? Well, since I've only been to Japan during the '90's, and If it was in Tokyo, I would say that things have changed for the better then!
Yes, there is Racism in Japan, but not really the "Jim Crow" type of blatant Racism, and if there are places that bar entry, there are plenty more places that will let you in, if money is involved!
The racism that I did hear about talked openly from what I could tell was for the Chinese people . My friend , who is Chinese, was called a prostitute , behind her back in an elevator by some women ( They also didn't know she also could speak Japanese , they assume that most Chinese don't. )
Chinese people are more of a Racial threat to the Japanese, the thinking goes, I guess... _________________ "Experience is Everything"
Ive been living here for 2 years and have not seen any racially inspired signs. Althought Ill bet there are places where only japanese are welcome.
Just a hunch
Why do the japanese follow so closely the matsui's and Ochiro's of this world. Is it just nationalism or is it a racial thing? I dont know
but then I have noticed the same quality of racism in blacks too. They always seem to notice color.

Alright,,I wasn't going to but this has always bothered me..
The only things I can think of that are truly discriminatory are things
like the United Negro College Fund, Jet Magazine, Black Entertainment Television, and Miss Black America.
Try to have things like the United Caucasian College Fund, Cloud Magazine, White Entertainment Television, or Miss White America; and see
what happens, and you know what will and who will be doing it.
If we are going to have equality, then lets have everything equal,,not more equal for some than others. , By God lets either cut bait or fish,,one or the other.
I realize that this is somewhat off topic, but it seems to be world wide,, no one pobly would have noticed it if the sign would have said "NO WHITES" or at least would thought it important enough to have remembered it for 20 years.

Oh, The same old tired argument again.....And you mean to tell me there isn't such things? They go by other names, not as blatantly labeled, but those things existed rampantly and still do exist today in one form or another, according to Institutional Racism. What racial group is in power in America? And by the way, this "thing" "happening" for a very long time. Please open your eyes.
As for what will and who will be doing it, it's been happening since the sixities, get used to it.

At last , the one decent thing that you said that I agree with! But human nature being what it is, it will be a long time coming.....

Uh Oh, back to your silly statements... . Of course people would notice anywhere in the world if there was a Sign that said "No Whites". Especially if those signs where in places and countries where whites were a minority group, looked different from the majority population, and had second class priviledges and opportunities, and largely shut out of the mainstream culture, which they would have no choice but to form their own ( see your first silly statement above ).
Trust me, you would be singing quite a different tune if you happened to live in those places..
Now I've said my piece, and it will be hard showing you my side of things unless you turned Black overnight, so let's end this on that. I know you what to rebutt this, but I won't reply.
Back to the Topic....What was the original Topic again?
Racism in Japan?
O, But you are wrong on a lot of points,, I have been denied entry ino places in the deep south of the US because I was WHITE., in one place because I done some work on equipment owned by the Black Bar owner, and he had a guy about the size of Shaq Oneil stay the evening at the table occupied my me and my son., At another the barman said "You Are Covered and you are welcome and placed a big pistol on the bar" That was in Alabama, and about the same thing happened in LA. and in Texas.
I sailed for years with a few Blacks on ships crewed out of the Seattle union hall, we would only sail together or not at all, So I do know something about it.
I also know that there is "Reverse discrimination" very previlant in the USA.
But I do know that you and I will have a different perspective as we are in fact different color. So therefore we will never be able to agree on this issue.
No a white lady cannot be a conterstant in the MBA contest, a white can not go to school thru the UNCF, and a white boy can not get into the union apprenticeship programs. I know because I tried to get my oldest son into the IUOE program.
But let you start an org. for whites exclusively like the orgs. I have mentioned for the blacks and Jessy Jackson and the NAACP will be there with their lawyers,,that my friend is reverse discrimination that is rampant in the USA today.
I could have and did fire a lot of guys and never got a bitch from the union when a white was fired , But everytime it was a black or a mexican, I could count on the union bull being in my office the next day with a discrimination complaint.

#1 reason to promote interracial relationships?
If the earth can survive(highly unlikely) long enough we may all one day be a nice equal shade of brown. _________________ asah, asih, asuh
