I have a bet going with an Australian colleague of mine that revolves around Sachin Tendulkar. To explain the bet, I need to tell a little story:
In 2002, Sachin Tendulkar passed 7500 test runs. I told my friend that he would soon also pass Allan Border's aggregate. My friend said I must be mad and that Sachin may well never pass Allan Border's mark.
I begged to differ and after much haggling, we settled on a bet.
The premise: Sachin Tendulkar will pass Allan Border's mark of 11174 runs before my colleague leaves Japan. If he does this, I win. If my friend leaves first, he wins.
The prize: One night of dinner, booze and entertainment anyhwere in Osaka (subject to the winner's choice). Could be a very expensive night.
Sachin now has 10469 runs, 705 runs less than Border. My question is when will this happen? India has three tests gainst South Africa in Nov-Dec, followed by three tests against Bangladesh in May.
Surely in six tests he'll knock those runs off? _________________ Wer tanzen will, muss die Musik bezahlen

Sachin Tendulkar is not much more than a walking wicket these days - or a walking statistic. Depends on how one looks at it. He hasn't played a match winning innings for India for YEARS now (hasn't even come close to it) - be it in Tests, or one dayers. He just scores runs which don't do much to alter the outcome of the match and adds to his overall tally ...
In my book, I'd rate Sanath Jayasuriya, Gilchrist, Andy Flower (remember him??), Lara, and even Steve Waugh over him, purely because they WON matches for their countries in tough situations ... especially Andy Flower, who I have great admiration for (in any other team, Andy would probably have way more runs/centuries).
Anyway, to score 705 runs over six tests against South Africa means he'd have to bat really well (if he gets to bat all 12 innings, it means he's gotta average around the 60 mark and that wont be easy against the Proteas even on Indian surfaces).
Going by current form and mood, I doubt he'll do it ...

Remember how Andy used to draw Tests against India? His team used to be in dire straits, then in came Andy Flower, out came the sweep and reverse sweep - and before one knew it, there was a ton and a double ton, and ZIM saved the match
How did I miss Punter Ponting in my list of top batters up there
I'd rate him above Tendulkar ANY DAY - look at the amount of Tests he's won or saved by scoring centuries in the second innings!!
And Boucher is battling on for the Proteas ... Can they do it
Only one wicket in had and a whole session remaining. Go Sri Lanka!
Good to see Gibbs out cheaply. Hey, wait a minute - 18! Isn't that what he got out for when he was caught match-fixing?
Try this list out:
-----------------------------------------------
Tests - Fastest to 6000 Career Runs
-----------------------------------------------
(Innings, NO Runs)
DG Bradman 68 7 6000
GS Sobers 111 16 6000
WR Hammond 114 14 6000
L Hutton 116 15 6000
KF Barrington 116 13 6000
SM Gavaskar 117 9 6000
IVA Richards 120 8 6000
SR Tendulkar 120 13 6000
RT Ponting 125 16 6000
R Dravid 125 15 6000
BC Lara 126 5 6000
GS Chappell 129 16 6000
------------------------
22nd: AR Border 140 24 6000
AND
-----------------------------------------------
Tests - Fastest to 10469 Career Runs
-----------------------------------------------
(Innings, NO Runs)
BC Lara 200 10 10469
SR Tendulkar 211 22 10469
AR Border 248 29 10469
SR Waugh 250 46 10469
He is definitely slowing down...
Well, the Lankans won the match, though I must admit I was hoping for a rearguard, not because I really support the Proteas, but because those are exciting ... That being said, all credit to the Lankans.
As far as Sachin, the FIRST half of his career was when he actually won matches. And he was fast too then (who can forget the hammering the Aussies got in Sharjah at his hands?) ... and at that time, he WON matches for India.
But now, he may come in and score a sedate 40 or 50 (both in Tests and 1 dayers) ... which does boost his average, # of runs scored, etc ... but he never really seems to win any match for India.
Something may be afoot in the SA series. I have a feeling Sachin is ready to shine. Maybe he won't need to based on SA's form against Sri Lanka!
Interesting to see that Gavaskar reached 6000 runs well ahead of Tendulkar.
Gavaskar in my opinion was more of a matchwinner in Tests than Sachin is (at least if you look at the overall career picture). He's the only guy the mighty West Indians (in the 80's) wrote Calypso songs about because he never got out! Also remember that before the Windies succesfully chased the highest Test score (and won) on a FLAT pitch, Gavaskar was one of the architects of the previous record ...
Though of course, he wasnt suited to playing one dayers (or maybe he didnt want to change his game to suit 1 day matches!).
And yes, if the South Africans are down in the dumps, Sachin will probably shine ... I can't remember when he last shone against a GOOD team though ... _________________ Dongguan Expat - Your online Community!

WOW! I am stunned! I know it's ok to bag Greg Chappell but isn't bagging Tendulkar tantamount to blasphemy for an Indian ? _________________ Wer tanzen will, muss die Musik bezahlen

It may be so for some Indians who elevate sportstars to the status of demi-gods ... I never classified myself as such. Heck, I haven't lived there for an extended period (except for six months after school working) since I was 17 ...
I don't bash Chappell because he's an Aussie, I bash him since he's a buffoon and a self centered one at that whose main concern is $$ and not to help the Indian team (Ok, so $$ is imporant to everyone, but one should be sincere to an extent also).
I bag Tendulkar not because he's an Indian but because what I am saying is fact, and I always believing in pointing out the facts, irrespective of race or nationality.
And last, Ganguly acts like a spoiled brat half the time. He flamed Dalimya in public - and next thing you know Dalmiya is back in power, and publicly calling Ganguly a "kid" (the way he said it was humiliating) - guess the boot is on the other foot now! Serves Ganguly right for bashing someone who helped him so much when he needed it.
