According to a recent on-line survey, fresh graduates from Singapore universities expect to earn between S$2,300 to S$2,800 per month.

Furthermore, they expect to be promoted by their second year with the employer Shocked

Are they aiming too high, especially with regards to promotion prospect? What do foreign bosses in Singapore think of Singapore's workforce?

good topic. Work hard and u will get promoted Mr. Green

I hate these systems where people get "promoted" based on years of service--many companies do that in Thailand . We have one guy who is underperforming and we have considered to terminate him--next thing we klnow--HR has given him a promotion--added salary and the title "senior" in front of his old title. What BS

Promotion purely through years of service and seniority is very much a Japanese practice, much more so than in any other culture. I have seen incompetent fools promoted to managerial level, when they should have been fired instead.

But coming back to the topic, I think what the Singapore graduates are expecting is quite different from the Japanese practice. The Japanese are willing to wait for years and work their way up, slowly. The Singapore graduates want to fast track their promotion!!! Frankly, I think they are spoiled.

Promotion purely on the basis of seniority is very much a Japanese practice, and sometimes, very inadequate people are promoted purely because they have been with the company for x number of years. I have seen incompetent fools promoted to managerial level, when they should be retrenched instead!

But coming back to the topic, what the Singapore graduates is expecting is quite different from the Japanese way. The latter are willing to wait for years and work their way up the corporate ladder slowly. The Singaporeans, on the other hand, want to fast track their promotions.

Frankly, what they are expecting is unrealistic. Unless one is exceptional, it is almost impossible to get a promotion in the second year. I think they have been spoiled.
