Description: For many students, spending a few months in China as an intern in an international or local company has almost become a must.It really is a great way to understand the Chinese work culture and learn about doing business or working in China. It's an invaluable addition to resume, and certainly is very much appreciated by employers worldwide.

Mandarin Rocks' Study-Internship program provides an opportunity for real life work experience, enabling students to gain insights of Chinese business and society working with Chinese and multinational companies operating in China. There are two parts to the program: a minimum of four-week intensive Chinese language course combined with training in basic business Chinese, and four to twelve weeks of internship experience. Most of the internships are in the Business Development, Research, Human Resources or Marketing departments of various industries. The internships are not paid.

In the first one or two months, there are 20 lessons of small group general Chinese language and 5 customized individual lessons or cultural study each week.The Chinese language classes focus on conversation skills needed in daily life and in the workplace. If there is not a group suitable to your language level on your planned start date, the 20 group classes will be converted into 10 individual lessons per week.

After the Chinese course is finished, you will start your internship. Participants will work in a selected company for a minimum duration of 4 weeks. Areas of industry include import-export, advertising, consulting, marketing and other business services. Some students with extensive international business experience work as assistants in business merger projects and assist the host companies when they deal with international partners. During the placement, you will receive full support from Mandarin Rocks. We will actively involve and guide you through the whole process. Extending your work placement is also possible if it is agreed by your host company.

Qualifications: Before a placement is offered on the program, you need to send us your application form and resume for evaluation. This should include your career goals, educational background and your previous work experience. To qualify, applicants should preferably speak fluent English and have at least an elementary level in Mandarin in order to become fully integrated in the work team. However, this program is also open to total beginner level participants worldwide. This program is aimed at students aged between 18 and 27 who have completed their secondary education.

The Study-Internship program is a featured program of MandarinRocks combining Chinese language learning with intern experience in Chinese or multinational companies operating in Shanghai, China. It provides an opportunity for students to enhance Chinese skills in real life working environment and enable them to gain insights of Chinese business and society.

There are two parts to the program: a minimum of four-week intensive Chinese language course and four to twelve weeks of internship experience. The internships are generally not paid but some host companies/organizations may provide a stipend to cover some meals and local transportation. Extending your internship is also possible if it is agreed by your host company. There are 16 start dates throughout the year for total beginners in Chinese while non beginners can start every Monday.

Qualification
The Study-Internship program in Shanghai is open to participants worldwide aged between 18 to 27 who have finished or pursuing university or college education. To qualify, applicants should preferably speak fluent English and have an elementary or above level in Chinese in order to become fully integrated in the work team. However, while Chinese is a definite plus, it is NOT a must. This program is also open to absolute beginners in Chinese.
NOT everyone that meets the above criteria is accepted. Before an internship placement is offered on the program, you need to submit application form and resume for our evaluation. This should include your career goals, educational background and your previous work experience. Phone interviews may be held before acceptance.
Most of the internships are in the Business Development, Research, Human Resources or Sales, Marketing departments of various industries. Most common fields include accounting, advertising, communications, education, event planning, fashion, finance, law, marketing, public relations, publishing, real estate, sports management, tourism, trade etc.
Other fields such as architecture, chemistry, engineering, medicine etc usually demand higher qualifications or relevant experience. If you want to intern in these non-business sectors, you can contact us to check availability first.

Language Learning
In the first one or two months, students will take intensive Mandarin Chinese Chinese classes at our centrally located school in Shanghai. There are 25 lessons every week, with 4 group General Chinese lessons and 1 customized individual lesson every day, Monday through Friday. The maximum size of each class is limited to 8 (average 3-5) to ensure every student gets full attention from teacher and has ample time for practice. The individual classes in the afternoon allow you to work on areas you may feel need extra practice or which are of particular interest to you. The classes encourage student interaction and help them improve conversation and written skills needed in daily life and in the workplace.

Internship Placement
After the Chinese language course is finished, participants will intern in a selected company/organization for 4 to 12 weeks based on intention. The internship placement is made in a foreign or Chinese company/organization operating in Shanghai that is commensurate with your qualifications, background, experience and interested field. Areas include accounting, advertising, communications, education, event planning, fashion, finance, law, marketing, public relations, publishing, real estate, sports management, tourism, trade etc. The internships are generally full time (Mon-Fri, around 35-40 working hrs/week). During the internship, you will receive full support from MandarinRocks program coordinator. The manager of host company will actively involve and guide you through the whole internship. You may also opt to add on-going individual lessons during internship period.
