I know nothing except what I have heard and read,,but from my point of view,,there needs to be something done between the Thai Gov't and the hill people,,seems like no understanding about new [to the hill tribes way of thinking] laws concerning immigration, living on this side of the burma border, Ways to make things legal, and papers for those that have been here for long periods of time. From what I hear, there are a lot of people without papers and the Thai refuse to give them legality because they are not Thai. no matter if they were born on this side or the burma side.
Something needs to be settled on that issue. a little give and take will not hurt,compremise is the only way as I think that records are not available and the Thai are not about to give up land to them when it is valuable and they have no proof of time of residence here.
I don't anything about the Thai hilltribes but its good to see a dialog started about the subject. from what I understand they migratred from China and were pressed into the opium trade by Chaing Kai Sheks army. Is that roughly correct?

And have lived whereever they want, paying no heed to international borders and some have actually been born in Thailand many years ago and have lived all their lives here, but cannot get a Thai passport as their parents were Burmese and not Thai, Seems like unless your parents are Thai then no way can you be Thai.
Unlike the USA where a mexican can sneak across the border, Have a kid and then they can not be deported because the kid is a citizen of the USA. But that is one reason that the USA is in such poor shape today,,poor Liberal laws that only bow down to everyone else and to he11 with the USA as long as you can give it away, By all means do so.
But as with the hill tribes,,most are or at least were ignorant of the laws or maybe even of the border locations,,some dialog with them should be started and something fair should be done to bring the delima up to date. instead of just going in and taking land that they have been on for generations and kicking them off to starve., and allowing missionarys to come in , take female children away from parents and give no thought to their cultures and education of such cultures, IMHO, all missionarys should be banned from Thailand and in fact all areas of the world outside of NYC.
As far as Thai cultures goes, they have decided to go with the world in advancing them selves into the 21 century and as such, have forgot their cultures in their run to be in the financial circles center and so they are mixed into the pot of world culture the same as everyone else. When you give up your old ways for the advancement of new world things, then thats the way it will be, The only ones you hear crying the THAI CULTURES crap is liberal Farang that want to see Thailand as a backward society that is still living in the era of "THE KING AND I" and some other crap for the benefit of such farang.
Just like some folks go into Israel and complain that they don't see the HOLY LAND and have to go into arab areas to get the pictures that they want of old men in robes leading a jackass. Israel is to modern to be the HOLY LAND.
Well Thailand is a modern society too, as is demonstrated by the fact that they are taking farm land away from hill tribes and putting it to use by the Thai gov't. unless said hill people can prove Thai citizenship.

I don't understand what this chaps problem is, and it would be good to have slander removed early from the forum. The only thing that has done is abuse people.
