by Emma Boyes
While there are many places in Tokyo that promise cheap sushi you often find on further inspection that there are strings attached. A seating charge. Only the plates with the red border are ¥100 and there is one plate with a red border. Having to take the next week off work due to food poisoning. But Kappa Sushi is the real deal, everything is ¥100, fresh and the restaurant is sparkly clean and hi-tech.
Just off the Omotesando-dori near Harajuku station (on the same side as GAP) you’ll see a sign かっぱ寿司 100円with the green animals that look like turtles (they’re actually Japanese mythical creatures known as Kappa). Up a steep stairway on the 2nd floor, this place has become a regular haunt. And as per the usual in my gaijin house, outings there have evolved into a Jackass-style competition—who can stuff their faces with the most food in one sitting. So far the reigning champ is Shish, with 19 plates of sushi and two desserts. Does anyone want to step up and challenge this man? We require photographic evidence. And the prize is well, nothing at all, unless being a fat bastard counts.
Firstly, this place is huge. It seats 120 people, at tables of up to 6 or on chairs around the conveyer belt. They also offer the largest variety of sushi I have ever seen. I counted 76 different types and they also add new stuff every now and then. All the regulars are there, all the varieties of salmon, tuna, clam and prawn under the rising sun. There are also sushi for the more adventurous with octopus, squid and tons of weird things that we’ve never seen before, but most of which taste pretty good. You’ll also find some strange “westernized” versions, including potato salad, roast pork, corned beef, bacon and hamburger sushi (together at last!). The plates are color-coded – a red circle means there’s wasabi on it and a yellow circle means it’s wasabi free. And don’t worry natto fans, there are plenty of natto rolls to go round. Stop pushing!
Also recommended is the crab soup for ¥150. It’s a big bowl and it has some crab in it. There’s beer too, for ¥300 a small glass and ¥450 for a “big” one. After you’re done with the sushi you can grab one of the desserts: chocolate cake, strawberry mousse and ice cream.
If you just can’t wait for your favorite fish to make it to your table, simply press the intercom button above the seats, ask for what you want and they’ll send it round to you. Once you’re ready to leave, press the round button to call a wait staff over. They’re damn good and can tell how many plates you’ve had in one glance.

There's nothing really special about that deal, I'm sorry to say. Unless you're a A) on a diet; B) a jockey (or similar in size) or C) not particularly hungry
The best way for foreigners with healthy appetites to get their money's worth is to go to an all-you-can-eat sushi train restaurant (kaiten sushi).
For example, there's one at the start of Shinsaibashi-suji in near Namba Station in Osaka. You pay 1200 yen (women) and 1400 yen (men). I usually eat 25-30 pieces, which would cost 2500-3000 yen in the restaurant above.
Pizza is exorbitant!!!!
The price of a large pizza at pizza hut depends on what you get. The cheapest large pizza is 2300 yen (USD$21.10) and the most expensive is the "King of Crab and Shrimp" at 3450 yen (USD$31.65).
I have the home delivery menu close at hand. Sad I know but I can't eat rice and noodles every day.
The general rule of thumb is that if it's bad for you, it's relatively cheap in Japan. Pizza Hut is the exception.
its like that in the base as well... but I dont have baseclearance.. I only go with my embassy friend :p and or with the school sports competitions.. _________________ Check out my site: http://www.expatkid.net
