HANOI, Nov. 17 (Xinhuanet) -- Some 500 Vietnamese women and children are annually trafficked to Cambodia, most of them are forced to work as prostitutes or slaves, local media reported Wednesday.
At the two-day conference on anti-human trafficking cooperationbetween Vietnam and Cambodia which started on Tuesday in Ho Chi Minh City, Cambodian police said some 18,000 women are working in the "sex industry" in Cambodia, 33 percent of whom are Vietnamese, including juveniles.
Some Vietnamese women are trafficked to Cambodia, and then transported to Thailand or Malaysia to work as prostitutes, beggars, housemaids or workers at construction sites, they noted. Cambodian police in Phnom Penh saved 44 Vietnamese women from brothels in the capital city in the first 10 months of this year.
According to incomplete statistics from Vietnam's Ministry of Public Security, last year 1,758 Vietnamese women and children were trafficked abroad, mainly to Cambodia, China, Malaysia and Singapore. Of the victims, 263 were very young, including 11 children aged under 10.
Vietnam late last month decided to set up a steering committee for an action program to fight trafficking of women and children. It is beefing up cooperation with international agencies and foreign countries, especially neighbors, on the issue.
